May 15th, 2018

It's May 15th already?
I'm in Washington, DC today and have had some really exciting meetings about the future of our nation. I wish I could tell you more, but I'd have to kill you, and I like you too much to do that! (just kidding - but it is top secret.)

In case you haven't heard, 1st & 15th is my new twice-monthly newsletter + blog where I'll highlight amazing people, news and organizations that are making a difference in the world of politics, faith, race, leadership and culture - and you'll be able to read it all in 3 minutes and go deeper through the links if you want.

I'd love to hear your feedback and if you find it interesting and helpful, please share it and encourage your friends to subscribe at

Joel Searby Wants to Take Down the Two-Party System

I had a great conversation with Jon Ward of Yahoo News whose podcast is exploring what's broken in American politics and how to address it. I was honored to be a part and I hope you'll give it a listen!

"Just fight a little longer, my friend..."

I love this song from Lecrae and Tori Kelly. I had the joy of spending a few days with them last year and they are both incredible people - the real deal. This song has meant a lot to me, with so many powerful lyrics. Especially this:

The world trying to play with my soul
I'm just tryna find where to go
I'm trying to remember the way
I'm trying to get back to my home
But, I can't do this on my own

Parenting for Fortnite

My 10 year-old son has recently started playing Fortnite, the massively popular video game. Before he started playing, my wife and I did some research about what it is, the risks and the realities. We try to do that with new games, movies and books. We've found Common Sense Media to be a great resource so I thought I'd share their link on Fortnite. Parenting is hard. Parenting well is really hard.

Neal Simon for US Senate!

Neal Simon is running for US Senate as an independent in Maryland - and he's killing it. Not only did he OUTRAISE the incumbent senator Ben Cardin in the first quarter, he's gaining serious momentum and is unlikely to have a serious Republican challenger. It's a great set-up for a big win for the independent movement. Here's what Neal said in a recent article:

"We're in the middle of a listening tour where I’m visiting all 24 counties...over 36 days and we’re about halfway through and everywhere we go we’re met with so much enthusiasm. People are starved for something other than partisanship and bickering, so we’ve got momentum in every aspect of the campaign."

Go Neal!

My Reading List

I've always got 8-10 books going at a time. I finish most of them but I just enjoy having different things to read. In addition to the stack in this photo (most of which I recently wrapped up) here's a few I really recommend right now! I really value getting exposed to a diversity of genres and topics. Click on any one for the Amazon link.

The African Americans by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
The Captured Economy by Steve Teles and Brink Lindsey
Building a Story Brand by Donald Miller
Plus my faithful monthly National Geographic Magazine!

Spotlight: "Created" ministry to trafficked women

Several of our friends and acquaintances are involved in this amazing ministry to women who have been trafficked for sex. They were featured on the "Today Show" on NBC last year and are doing amazing work that is truly restoring the lives of some of society's most broken and forgotten people. Watch the video below and learn more at their website - and please consider supporting them financially here.
